The MFSI Certification Program
Certification tells builders, installers, and owners that a film has been independently tested against MFSI standards — not just claimed by the manufacturer. Here's how a product earns and keeps the mark.
A mark that means something, backed by data.
Verified Performance
Independent lab proof that your film meets a recognized marine-grade standard, not just a spec sheet claim.
Specification-Documentation
Test reports and technical data sheets formatted for boatbuilders, surveyors, and insurers.
The MFSI Certified Mark
A recognized mark of compliance for packaging, spec sheets, and installer materials.
Ongoing Quality Assurance
Annual surveillance testing keeps certification tied to real, current production — not a one-time test.
Key Certification Requirements
1. Traceable Manufacturing
Products must be manufactured under a documented Quality Management System (QMS) ensuring consistent production batches.
2. Standardized Testing
All laboratory testing must strictly follow MFSI-approved test protocols performed by accredited third-party facilities production batches.
3. Mark Usage Compliance
Applicants must agree to strictly follow the MFSI Mark Guidelines across packaging, marketing, and technical datasheets.
Five stages, start to certified.
Apply
Submit a certification application describing the film system, intended use, and any existing technical data.
Sample Submission
Provide production-representative samples to an MFSI-recognized independent testing laboratory.
Independent Testing
Samples are tested against the relevant MFSI standards — adhesion, abrasion, UV, waterline, or surface prep, as applicable.
Technical Review
MFSI's technical committee reviews test results, documentation, and manufacturing controls before a decision.
Certification & Listing
Certified products receive the MFSI mark and a public listing, subject to annual surveillance testing to stay current.

Common questions
-
Most applications move from sample submission to a certification decision in 8–12 weeks, depending on lab scheduling and which standards apply to your product.
-
Any manufacturer or formulator of films, adhesives, or coatings intended for marine use can apply — including established brands and newer entrants seeking third-party validation.
-
Certification is valid for 12 months and renewed through annual surveillance testing, which confirms current production still meets the original standard.
-
No. MFSI is an independent nonprofit standards body. Testing is conducted by accredited third-party laboratories, and technical committee members disclose any conflicts of interest
-
Applicants receive a detailed test report and may revise the product and resubmit. There's no penalty for a first-round result that doesn't meet threshold.
